Extract of ATV Today archive footage in Ron Howard’s ‘Rush’

Media Archive for Central England

Those of you who have seen Ron Howard’s Niki Lauda and James Hunt biopic, Rush, will have seen the film contains archive images of the two racing heroes in the 1970s. One of these extracts was supplied to the film by MACE.

The extract of archive film is from 18th July 1975 and was taken from an interview conducted by ATV Today sports reporter Gary Newbon on practice day of the British Formula 1 at Silverstone, in which the two drivers discuss the forthcoming race, their cars and a new chicane on the track. In 1975 James Hunt was driving for Hesketh Racing and Lauda was driving for Scuderia Ferrari.

It’s a good interview, with the two drivers looking relaxed and bantering with each other sharing what comes across in this interview as a friendly rivalry and mutual respect.

A year later James Hunt was racing for McLaren and won the Championship.

The archive, from the ATV Today collection we hold, is the copyright of ITV and was licensed to the film by clip sales company ITN Source. If you’re going to see the film, have a look at our compilation above and see if you can spot the extract.
