Web sites

    There is a growing number of web sites offering online access to a range of films (generally in extract form) from Film Archive Forum members, usually with contextualising material. These will all require one or other of the the free video-player software programmes: Windows Media Player, QuickTime or Real. Some sites are restricted to educational users only.

  • Creative Archive Licence Group

    The BBC, the BFI NationalArchive, Channel 4 and the Open University have set up the Creative Archive Licence Group to make audiovisual archive content available for download under the terms of the Creative Archive Licence - a single, shared user licence scheme for the downloading of moving images, audio and stills. Initial content from the BFI National Archive is now available from http://creative.bfi.org.uk/. Freely available

  • Film and Sound Online

    Film and Sound Online (formerly Education Media Online) is a diverse collection of high-quality moving image encodings, designed for use across the UK's Higher and Further Education sector, using the JANET broadband network. Among the collections featured are the Films of Scotland series from the Scottish Screen Archive and substantial material from both world wars from the Imperial War Museum Film Archive. Access is restricted to UK Higher and Further Education institutions, which need to sign into a sub-licence before use, which remains free. The moving images are delivered in the Windows Media Player and QuickTime formats, and are downloadable for local reuse. Restricted use

  • Films from the Home Front

    This new lifelong learning resource is dedicated to giving people of all ages the opportunity to discover more about the impact of the Second World War and the immediate post-war period on everyday life. It offers a unique perspective on the lives of ordinary people in Britain on the home front as seen through amateur films and home movies and alongside more ‘official’ sources such as newsreels and government films, taken from the collections of the member archives of the Film Archive Forum. The site is a part of the Moving History site. Freely available

  • Moving History

    Moving History is an online guide to the UK's public sector moving image archives, designed to encourage the use of such archives for scholarly research. It has been produced for the AHRB Centre for British Film and Television Studies by Screen Archive South East. The site contains 100 film clips, arranged by archive or by theme, in-depth descriptions of the archives, and guidelines for researchers. The themes include Arts and Culture, Coastal and Waterways, Drama and Entertainment, Family Life, Gender and Cultural Diversity, Industry, Leisure, Rural Life and Urban Life. The clips are available in high, medium and low bit rates, and require Windows Media Player. Incorporates Films from the Home Front. Freely available

  • Nation on Film

    The BBC television series Nation on Film, which includes material from Film Archive Forum members, has a complementary website. This includes a wide range of streamed video clips from the North East Film and Television Archive, South West Film and Television Archive, North West Film Archive and East Anglian Film Archive. Films from other Forum members archives will be added to the series in 2004. Requires RealPlayer. Freely available

  • Scotland on Film

    The large number of archive audio and video clips included here are from the holdings of the Scottish Screen Archive, and are organised by location, subject and in alphabetical order. The themes illustrated include Home Life, Childhood & Schooldays, Work, Health and others, all of which can be discussed on a series of linked discussion forums. Requires RealPlayer. Freely available

  • Screenonline

    Screenonline is a huge educational resource created by the British Film Institute which covers British film and television history in great detail. It has several hundred hours of clips (and some full films and programmes) from the bfi National Film and Television Archive collection. This includes films organised by regions of the UK. The films are available to UK schools, colleges, libraries and university libraries only, for which users have to register (for free) in advance. Requires QuickTime, Real Player and Windows Media Player (streaming only, not downloads). Restricted use
